I've been tagged by Friendly Humanist (cross blogspace interaction?? gaspé!)to do a meme. Here are the rules:
1. Pick up the book nearest you with at least 123 pages. (No cheating!)
2. Turn to page 123.
3. Count the first five sentences.
4. Post the next three sentences.
5. Tag five other bloggers.

There are three books equidistant in front of me so I guess I'll include them all. (Fortunately, they are closer than the stack of six to my left.)

From left to right:

The Unicode 5.0 Standard by the Unicode Consortium:
"This section specifies the default algorithms for case conversion, case detection, and caseless matching. For information about the data sources for case mapping, see Section 4.2, Case---Normative. For a general discussion of case mapping operations, see Section 5.18, Case Mappings. The defaoult casing operations are to be used in the absence of tailoring for particular languages and environments."

The Tree of Yoga by B.K.S. Iyengar
"Though they may appear to be supernormal powers, they are not supernatural, but are simply the finest of the powers of nature. As the practitioner has developed sensitivity and intelligence, he experiences the effects of that sensitivity. These powers are normal, though they appear supernormal to people who have not developed that degree of sensitivity."

How to Calculate Quickly by Henry Sticker:
"No new principles are involved in multiplications of this type. The student is simply asked to apply the methods which he has already learned to larger numbers. ... Review the examples in Exercise No. 338 above."

Usually, I don't tag, but I like this one, and I'm curious. Not sure I can constrain myself to just five though...

"This feature is used in the case of a planohyperbolic fiber lens (the corss section of the fiber has a planohyperbolic shape) to collimate the fast axis of the laser diode arrays, as shown in Fig 7.6. The distance of the laser diode from the lens is determined by the index of refraction of the lens.
"Improvements in the quality of injection-molded plastic optics make the use of them possible in camera lenses and projection lenses. The optical design of these kinds of lenses is difficult because many parameters have to be considered such as:"

_Optical Systems Design_, Robert E. Fischer, Biljana Tadic-Galeb, 2000.

"The stomach empties more rapidly after human milk than after whole cow's milk; however, no appreciable difference in gastrointestinal passage time exists between human milk and processed milk formulas during the first 45 days of life. The curd of cow's milk is reduced in size by boiling; it is made considerably less tough and much smaller by the heating required in evaporation, by the addition of acid or alkali, and by homogenization. In contrast, the curd of breast milk is fine and flocculent and readily broken down by the stomach."

Nelson's Textbook of Pediatrics, 14th Edition. (I keep my medical textbooks in the computer room!) Edited: I just realized I didn't add the third sentence - they were long sentences - so there's the riveting conclusion to how breast milk is easier to digest.

hah. that's what i get for keeping my computer in the living/dining/kitchen area.

"Fry the breadcrumbs in the oil until darkened and crisp, then drain them on a piece of paper towel and allow to cool. Make your basic risotto recipe. Place a large saucepan on a medium to high heat and pour in half the stock, followed by all your risotto base."

-Jamie Oliver, Cook With Jamie

not particularly philosophical or anything, but sounds tasty. part of the recipe for "spicy pangrattato risotto".

-s.

p.s. all your risotto base are belong to us? ;)

I'm defining sentences by periods, not by independent clauses/complete thoughts.

"...Did you know that he brought young Myra up all by himself after his wife died? With a certain amount of assistance from me. The one thing he jibbed at was giving her her bath, so he used to call me in of an evening, and I would soap her back, keeping what the advertisements call a safe suds level."

- "Service with a Smile," P.G. Wodehouse

The next sentence is, "It was a little like massaging an eel."
